Heirs and Graces give expert tuition in a diverse range of patchwork, quilting, knitting, felting, beading and embroidery techniques.

We have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in our own classroom, catering for all skills. A full range of fabrics, yarns and speciality embroidery requirements is available from our shop.

Here is a quick taster of our up-coming classes and workshops. Workshops are run between 10am and 4pm unless otherwise stated. Block a Month

Block a Month

Our ‘Block a Month’ courses are designed to give you enjoyable tuition in the art of Patchwork and Quilting. By joining a group you come once per month, learn different techniques in a relaxing and fun atmosphere.

Our classes are small and cater for all skill levels, we teach on an individual and flexible basis, and you work at your own pace.

You will be with like minded people who come to relax, get away from everything for a few hours and end up with a project that you can be proud of.         

The techniques that we cover include; English Patchwork; Strip piecing; American Patchwork; Curved Seams; Machine Strip; Cathedral Window; Pieced Patchwork; Foundation Piecing; Celtic; Paper Piecing; Sashiko; Hand Applique; Stained Glass; Hawaiian Applique; Reverse Applique; Folk Art Quilts; Crazy; Bargello; Miniature Quilts; Seminole; Tessellations; Sashings and Joining Blocks; Borders;Edgings and Sleeves

The cost is £35.00 for the day, plus materials OR £175.00 for six classes (One class free!).

We have classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays each month.

Hardanger Part 1

Hardanger Part 2

This class is a half-day class running from 10am to 1pm.

You will learn the technique used in Norwegian embroidery. From the class you will learn the skills which can help you to create beautiful pieces of embroidery.

People often wish to hae a follow-up class where skills are built upon, this is the Hardanger Part 2 class.

Goldwork
Thursday 27th October 2011

 

This class is a half-day class running from 10am to 1pm.

Beautiful and delicate embroidery using luxurious silk ribbon and threads.

You will learn how to incorporate fine silk ribbons in beautifully subtle colours into a  delightful picture of poppies; the ribbons are applied using a technique that produces a realistically raised effect.  Silk ribbons can be used for embellishments on clothing, card making, quilts and cushions.

You will leave with a beautiful piece of work that will inspire you to develop and apply this  technique to a range of projects.

Smocking

Thursday 10th November 2011

This class is a half-day class running from 10am to 1pm.

This technique, which gathers fabric, was commonly used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also can be dated back to the Middle Ages.

In this class you will have the opportunity to learn the skills to make a Christmas bauble decoration from this beautiful art.

quillow

Quillow
Monday 21st November 2011

A quillow is a quilt that folds into a pillow – useful for car journeys, students, holidays and cold winter evenings!

You will learn the basics of making patchwork using the quick method of Log Cabin, i.e. accurate cutting using a rotary cutter, placing and stitching fabrics.

You may need a further class to assemble and quilt your quillow.

Basic Embroidery Stitches

This class is a half-day class running from 10am to 1pm.

Eager to learn to embroider, but don't know where to start? This is the class for you!

In this class you will learn all the basic stitches to give you a great start to progress.

Christmas Surprise
Saturday 3rd December 2011

Blackwork
Monday 5th December 2011

 

This class is a half-day class running from 10am to 1pm.

Using black thread to create the impression of textures in different designs, this technique was made popular in the Tudor era. It is popularly seen worn by Elizabeth I.

You will learn the basics of Blackwork, leaving with a knowledge which will help you complete the chart you are given.

Crazy Bag
Tuesday 6th December 2011

An introduction to decorative machine stitching and embroidery.

You will learn how to rotary cut fabric, appliqué and use decorative stitches on your sewing machine to good effect.

We will be making a bag on the day using these techniques.

£35 plus materials

SPECIAL classes on other techniques can also be arranged – please enquire

 



This weeks top tip:

Use only 100% cotton thread with your 100% cotton fabric. Polyester is too strong for the cotton fabric, and 20-30 years on, the polyester will pull the pieces apart at the seams by ripping the fabric.
